Color Design Form

I have made the following observations and revilations in Color, Drawing, Form class.
Takeing a formal aprouch to how you display, phograph, or illustrait an idea will drasticly effect how the viewer see's the composition as a whole.
Drafting skills are extremly helpful in designing things in an acurate perspective as if it it were occupieing space. (illustraited 3D objects or diagrams of 3D objects with flat artwork projected on them)

Color is one of the most complicated yet descriptive tool in a designers study and practice. if one can utilize the effects of color one can create visualy stimulating work that has a powerful way of moveing eyes to a larger understanding of what the creaters messege is about .

These three Aspects of Design will be very usefull in what I choose to do, and how I observe the world.
My awareness of  form and the presense of color has stregthend in my observations and i will continue to use all that i have learned with a much broader understanding.

This year i could have produced more in sertain areas but i need to attack my studies in a less stressfull manor.

Find And Share

For my find and share I chose to share a flash game.
This flash game relates to class because of the real world elements used as components to the flash game
All the objects and subject matter that is visual in this game are all hand crafted out of cardboard.
I thought it to be an excellent example of taking hand made works and images and using it as content for the game.

reading response vector vs bitmap

So in response in the article that i read about the diffrence in use between a bitmap and a vector image pretty much told me everything i already know. 
Vector formatted images are very much use full for files that will be up scaled or down scaled such as logos, graphics for billboards, silk screen graphics like t-shirts, and many other things.
Bitmap images are pure oposite from vectors because they are perfict for photographic images and web images as opposed to relitivly flat artwork like a vector.

the big diffrence between the two is how the computer functions with the information.
Bitmaps have tiny cells of color more comfortably known as pixels, these pixels in one image can be millions of difrent colors. if you scale a bitmap image down the pixels still look great as a whole composition or image. but the downside to a bitmap is if you try to scale it up the computer cant create colors with no instructions to follow therefore incresing size renders you a blurry, foggy image of lesser quality then the original.

a vector image is quite different and computers love to scale them ( so i think haha!) vectors are shapes made with points and lines and solid colored fills and gradients. these you can scan because instead of remembering single pixels the computer remember the geometry and mathematics to recreate something to the given size any day or any time. (computers love math, I don't, that's why I love computers ;D) any how with a given set of instructions ( the math and geometry) the computer can recreate your image with no problem or distortion

Josef Albers and his incredible color plates

Color, color, color,  on the left is a color wheel constructed from my color aid. I felt very acomplished after succsesfully arangeing these hues to make such a fantastic wheel of color.
My apologies for the green back ground, but because of it i can tell you that the green color is affecting the wheel in all of its colorful glory in look and appearance. This is due because of subtractive and additive optical mixing that occurs with color

We took a field trip to see Josef
Albers's original color plates at the library.
This was a lovely exsperience to behold!
I did noy reolize that our library had a rare collection of information such as these color plates.
With so many color plates to see it will be hard to talk about.

I believe this was a fancy study in how 3 colors can look like 4. There is a flap that if lifted, reveals that the half circle shapes are conected. This elegant study was one of my favorites to observe first hand.

This last study above  is a study of additive and subtractive transperncy.
Albers is adding and subtracting light for the viewer's eyes. The left plate is additive transparency,
the right plate is subtractive transparency. Keep in mind the terms are referring to the mixture of light which can be confusing if not explained.

Prepared statement

I present to you a book of lines, positioned in a sense of similarity. The concept i tried to capture within the photography side of this work, are the different angles and views of things i catch myself observing everyday. I believe most people don't even notice the intracit curves of a curb, or the interesting reflections in a window on a bright sunny day. Taking the line studies we created through out the project i have selectively chosen those lines that best represent the photographs i have taken to bring into the prospective of the viewer an appreciation for the environment they live in and the beauty within the concrete structure of Westport in Kansas city.

Falling Gradiants / Falling leaves
For concept one i would like to photograph all the subtle colors of fall leaves as the colors range all over the place as they begin to fall from the trees. depending on the tree and amount of sunlight hitting the surface of the leaves changes the color mixtures of leaves. for example top of tree will be bright yellow middle section red and the bottom are green with a mixture of hues were they intersect.


Produce Abundance
For this idea I would be going into to various food markets, farmer’s market’s, or anywhere I could find produce. The range of color in the produce section is fantastically abundant and a range across the color wheel. Depending on the produce type the hues and colors will contain a variety of richness.   (Like a pile of pumpkins of different hues)

color in Textures and flat surfaces.
  I will photograph textures and flat surfaces of all kinds. for example i would have one photo of a blue texture next to a photo of a flat blue surface.  there are an infinitive amount of possibility to find textures of all kinds. the pairing of flat and textured surfaces would be a great combination of image pairs to convey contrast in feel but similarity in hue's and color.

In the video we watched in class Scher talked about how new york inspired her work.
so i started focusing more on what kind of things were subconciously affecting my work being in kansas city.




Being a Graphic designer in Kansas City of all places is pretty inspiring. the environment in kansas city Westport area can be pretty inspiring at time but it doesn't really affect my ideas iterated in my designs. However for this project allot of my images i photographed are different perspectives I tend to take more then a few seconds then glance to notice. I always catch myself staring off at large parking garages, paint covered stair steps, and more then anything else textures. some of the textures of this city are older then probably everyone in studio combined. These stained concrete surfaces, muck covered ally walls, are beautiful compositions created by thousands upon thousands of people for a very large undetermined amount of years. thats the big difference from being in the suburbs and the city as well. This city is its own entity, it has created its own identity though the work of millions across time. especially West port, being older then kansas city and one of the last trading posts until the west coast at one point in time. This place holds many stories and to much history for any one person to focus on. I would say the sheer mass of history this place has is the most inspiring aspect for me.

So to wrap up the project on lines and juxtaposition, i am writing this blog post! yay.

So the process of this specific assignment was very lengthy, but full of good processes to learn. Given the chance to repeat the whole of the assignment again I believe I'd have a much stronger outcome from my pairs. I personally think that having a slight idea what the final product of a lengthy assignment is a detrimental aspect to keep in the back of my mind.  If I would have known that we had to pair up photos with line studies for example, I would not have used certain techniques while doing my line projections for the vertical line studies. (Why?) Simple I crumpled some of my studies to project on the wall which was completely unmatchable with any photograph I took.  This cause me great peril when tring to find some vertical studies and sent me on a few more photo shoots for completely new material with only 1 clear vertical study.

as far as the process as a whole,  I learned lot of things as far as how to make complex images out of something simple using tools such as scanners and copiers. I learned how to identify juxtaposition between images, i strengthend my own ability to place images with juxtaposition, i learned how to make a sweet style of book that has more user intrest then general book bindings.

as far as things I would do differently next time would be creating more subtle curved line studies, most of mine were overly chaotic.  and most importantly create a larger base of material to work with for easyer pair match up.

In Westport you can find many things, objects, places, and people. All of these things no matter what they are have one thing in common with each other. everything you perceive in this world is made up of points and lines. These elements can be curved , diagonal or as strait as an arrow. Lines are everywhere, and relate to each other more then anything else in this world. Every angle can have a reflection, every line will continue in space, wether it be physical or metaphysical space inside your imagination. Take a walk into the third dimensional world, and observe the wholesome power of the continuous point. Look at the harmoniously weaving curves curbside. Check out all the crossed intersecting lines that make up things like parking garages. Go take a walk and make your own line through this dimension and see the building block of form with appreciation.

3d letter form procces

Constructing an abstracted letter form.

In this post is a few shots of creating an abstracted form of an uppercase letter I. My focus on form was to bring more dynamic angles to the uppercase letter I. I personally feel the letter I is over looked do to its simple form.  What i did was play with stroke to make sections of squares smaller in scale to larger in scale. The project was constructed from foam core.

I feel i succeded in makeing the form of "I" more dynamic by adding such square angles. This idea was perfict for the shape of "I" and would not have worked as well with a letter form with curved strokes or counters.

I then spray painted the planes with a white surface. So far I've applied about 3 or 4 coats.        I feel my overall craft could have been more focused on do to a lot of seam issues along the edges. I fixed this by applying tape and a few more coats of paint.

After construction we began studting form in space with black and white digital photography.

the last of these three images is one of my outcomes. The cropping of the form in this picture creates a feeling of stability. its also a visual metaphor because you can also perceive a feeling of unbalanced do to the angle of the form.

later we will be constructing another accordion style book with photo pairs of our letter forms.

So here pictured on the left are pair options for page spreads. the images will be 7x7 and the book will be accordion style binding.

Not all of these pairs will appear within the book. The goal of this project is to create juxtapositional pairs, and help us refine our photography, abstract thinking, hand drawing, and craft skills.  So far I have learned a great deal about how images get chosen in the process of book design. some pairs are more stronger then others based on the photograph, line quality, contrast, depth, and various other variables. Some of these image pairs will be omitted from the book do to small things like alignment, or perhaps it needs to be replaced with a curved line to achieve a better balance within the books pages.  We want to focus on keeping each pair of images interesting compositional. The second pair of images, from the top of the image on the left is a prime example of a page spread that is not that interesting  compositional wise.

Flash animation recap

So in typography we created a flash video depicting 2 fonts and how they mesh together via animation. In an earlier post you can find the complete animation. in this post you will find the process of creating the content for the Flash video.

On the left is one of multiple scans of drawings cropped from 2 different fonts. My letter was m. This is a set of drawings for the font, ITC New Baskerville STD.
The goal was to crop interesting parts of the letter that have a good contrast in positive and negative space.


The other font chosen was Utopia.
further in the project I omitted utopia m's and replaced them with Bell Gothic STD to help the viewer see the change when we reached the flash portion of the project. Bell Gothic has no serifs which increased the difference in the 2 font choices   The change was good example to how 2 fonts can be similar and further more hard to tell apart based on what your using the type face for.

This second image are the vectorized versions of my chosen cropped views. notice Im still using Utopia at this point. (both sets of four have serifs)

All are re sized and have cleaned up appearance.

 

The third image is 3 diffrent animation sequences.
This is kind of story board style. By adding this part in before hitting the flash tools, a designer can help map out directional movement to get a more natural movement. Its also useful to help show your ideas for an animation to team members, other designers, or colleagues before the actual animation comes in. This will help save a designer lots of time in case he makes an animation and the client doesn't like the movement of the object or type.

next we chose images to mask in our animations, from this point on everything was primarily digital.
we ended with our complete animations.  Mine was not furnished with sound at the turn in date. But i utilized some digital sound editing and recording tools to create a music loop featuring myself on dejembe and my girlfriend Harmony lovell on guitar to add into my animation.

reading response-color

So to recapture my thoughts on what I read (page 1-11) in Interaction of Color i will write this post. basicly what i read reiterated my previous thoughts surrounding color. Color is reconizable to every single person, but not distict hues or shades. when someone says red all the listeners are familure with red, but each person will have a different shade or thought or memory of the color mentioned.

color is prevalent in our world EVERYWHERE. But not naturally as a single hue. given the natural light and direction of light colors will change either lighter or darker depending on the viewers perspective.   i might be staring at a huge completly red billboard head on with the sunlight shineing right on it and it would be a bright shade of red. However, if the sunlight was behind the billboard, the shade of red would be much darker given the shadow.

color is an amazing phenomenon in my perspective of this world and I'm absolutely stoked to start our color theory.

Pertaining to lack of blog updates

So I have realized that i need to start documenting what I'm doing WAY more often on this here blog.
so within the next week One Of my prime objectives will be to get this blog up to date with all my projects that have ben going on.

Paragraph One

My perception of this world is very fond of me.  In the immediate proximity of my location on this gigantically small world Is small part of Kansas City known as, Westport.

West port is my home in the third dimension. This part of the big city contains all the things my mind is aware of when I notice. All these things are made from lines of all sorts and sizes and different relevant similarities. This book of selected as well as crafted images are a few things I took the time to notice and create within this small town. From the creation process of this book I have realized no matter how small your world is it is still gigantic in comparison of something else with all the angels and curves and strait on perceptions it contains.

This book contains lines that were photographed in Westport in Kansas City, Missouri as well as hand crafted lines from various methods and assembled to create contrasting similarity between the physical world and the world of lines.
